"Our England" - Explore the politics of poetry with Alan McGuire
Book Launch and “Open Mic” Poetry Session
Secret Kingdoms is delighted to welcome poet Alan McGuire for the launch of “Our England”, a politically engaged poetic meditation on England, as seen from abroad and through visits. The poems confront a loss: the dream of a collective bright future that once sustained working-class life. They evoke the quiet resilience and solidarity that lingers in the after-hours of a broken and beleaguered country that still has the capacity to remake itself.
Alan McGuire is a poet, writer, English teacher, and serves as an Associate Editor at Culture Matters. His work blends class politics, culture, and place-based storytelling across page, mic, and screen. He is also the founder and co-host of the Sobremesa Podcast, which explores culture, history and politics in contemporary Spain.
The Event will start with a short interview with Alan about the genesis and purpose of Our England, including readings, also touching on his previous work, particularly The Last Days of Alicante, plus a Q&A. He will then open the session up to poetry readings from local poets with something to say about the world today. (if you wish to read (4m max) – please register in advance with davidprice@secretkingdoms.es) Refreshments will be served and there will be a signing.
