Travel through other places with Pallavi Aiyar
Secret Kingdoms is delighted to welcome back Pallavi Aiyar to present her latest book, Travels in the Other Place, an original collection of personal essays that takes a deep dive into themes of identity and belonging across varied landscapes- both physical and metaphorical.
Pallavi is a territorially polygamous, award-winning, foreign correspondent, columnist, and author. She has spent over 25 years reporting from India, China, Belgium, Japan, Indonesia, and Spain. She is the author of eight books, including Smoke and Mirrors, Punjabi Parmesan, Babies and Bylines and Orienting. Pallavi writes a weekly newsletter on global travel and culture on substack, The Global Jigsaw.
About the book
From her bookish childhood in 1980s India to her shock cancer diagnosis in Spain in 2022, Pallavi Aiyar has been a lifelong wayfarer. Journeying through decades, languages and continents, she has gathered a kaleidoscope of lenses through which to view the terrain without, and the self within. Blending memoir, philosophy and travel writing, the book comprises eight discrete encounters with Pallavi at different ages, in different locations. A witty and humane meditation that excavates the personal—illness, passports, parenting, even hair— to reveal sharp universal truths.
