Madrid – defiance and generosity

Explore our shared history with Luke Stegemann
Madrid – defiance and generosity

Madrid - How did an insignificant village in central Spain become the beating heart of a vast empire, and one of the worlds great cities?

Luke Stegemann tells the surprising story of Madrid´s flourishing, as a cauldron of artistic brilliance and political dissent, and a vital link between Europe and the Americas. Having overtaken Barcelona as a centre of finance and cultural tourism, this dazzling biography showcases the city and people like never before.

Luke Stegemann is an Australian cultural historian. He has spent much of his adult life living in Spain, writing on art, politics and history for a wide range of publications. His book Amnesia Road (2021), comparing stories of violence and forgetfulness in Andalucía and Queensland, was winner of the Queensland Literary Award for Non-Fiction, and the Mark & Evette Moran Nib Literary Award. Madrid: A New Biography is also published in Spanish as Madrid: Historia de una ciudad de éxito.

This event will take an interview format with Luke discussing Madrid: A New Biography, and reading extracts from it. This will be followed by a Q&A.

Refreshments will be served and there will be a book signing. Whilst the event is free, places are limited and we do ask that you buy a 3€ voucher, redeemable at the event.
