What We Tried to Bury Grows here - Julian Zabalbeascoa

A fight for humanity when Spain was tearing itself apart
What We Tried to Bury Grows here - Julian Zabalbeascoa

What We Tied to Bury Grows here is a haunting tale of survival, longing, and empathy, set during the Spanish Civil War. In late 1936, Isidro Elejalde joins the fight to preserve his country’s democracy, inspired by the rousing words of a political essayist. In Bilbao, Mariana raises her two young children while, with her writing, she implores the world to support the republic.

Through a chorus of voices, we follow Isidro and Mariana as they struggle to maintain their humanity in a country tearing itself apart.

What We Tied to Bury Grows here was a finalist for a Los Angeles Times Book Prize. The Boston Globe lauded its ability to bring "together family lore and mountains of research to paint a kaleidoscopic portrait of the Spanish Civil War, particularly its impact on the people of Spain’s Basque region,” while the New York Times celebrated it as “a fiery, visceral tale of the Spanish Civil War."

Julian Zabalbeascoa is a dual citizen of Spain and the US, born and raised in California’s Central Valley. He earned his MFA in Creative Writing in Madrid and taught throughout California before moving to Boston, where he now teaches at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, his short stories have appeared across a wide range of publications.
