Explore Spain's Past and its People in Fiction

An evening with novelist Patricia Roman
Explore Spain's Past and its People in Fiction

Secret Kingdoms is delighted to welcome novelist Patricia Román for a celebration of her Spain-set novels. Patricia was born, raised and educated in Oxford, England; a place that stimulated her interest in all things bookish. Her Spanish grandmother was a huge influence on Patricia's early life, recounting her own childhood steeped in poverty and restraint. Living in rural Spain, she draws on this Spanish heritage to write poetry and historical fiction whose protagonists are ordinary people, always flawed and sometimes on the cusp of trickery or madness and sometimes both. What unites them is living in extraordinary times where the political and the personal collide, and thus Patricia's stories evolve…

Letters from the Mountains is historical fiction set in Franco's Spain, exposing the hardships endured by the population in post-civil-war Spain and offering a story about friendship, valour and love.

Mothers Daughters Liars is a story of transgenerational trauma set near Gibraltar at the end of the nineteenth century when gossip and lies had the power to bring a good woman down.

The Cuckoo and the Cuckquean tells of the troubled lives of six Spanish women that coincide, collide and intersect. When Pepa enters their lives, grievances and resentments are put aside and the women form an alliance campaigning for the Spanish suffragettes.

The event is an interview with readings and there will be a Q&A. Refreshments will be served and there will be a signing. The event is free, places are limited and we ask that you buy a 3€ voucher, redeemable at the event.
